Center news : Pink October at Ibn Khaldoun Medical Center: A Yearly Commitment to Breast Cancer Prevention

Every year, the month of October turns pink around the world to raise awareness about the fight against breast cancer.

As part of this international campaign, the Ibn Khaldoun Medical Center (CMIK) once again joins the cause by organizing a free breast cancer screening day dedicated to all women.

This initiative reflects our ongoing commitment to prevention and early detection, two key factors in improving survival rates.

During this special day, our healthcare professionals will offer their expertise to the community by providing:

  • - Clinical breast examinations performed by our specialist doctors
  • - Personalized advice on prevention and follow-up
  • - Informational brochures about breast cancer and self-examination techniques

Breast Cancer in Numbers:

  • - Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women.
  • - In Tunisia, around 1,500 new cases are reported each year.
  • - Nearly 1 in 8 women is at risk of developing breast cancer during her lifetime.
  • - Over 90% of breast cancers detected early can be cured.
  • - Thanks to screening, the 5-year survival rate reaches about 90% when detected early.
  • - Most cases occur in women over 40, but 10% affect younger women.

Why Pink October?

The Pink October campaign goes beyond awareness — it relies on a scientific approach focused on three key areas:

1. Secondary prevention: Early detection

Breast cancer can remain asymptomatic for several months. Regular screening helps identify the disease before clinical signs appear. Recommended techniques include:

  • - Mammography (starting at age 40, every 2 years, or earlier if there’s a family history)
  • - Breast ultrasound (often complementary for younger women or those with dense breast tissue)
  • - Annual clinical examination by a healthcare professional
  • - Monthly self-examination (helpful but not sufficient alone)

2. Risk factors and primary prevention

Some risk factors are non-modifiable (genetics, age, family history), but others can be influenced:

  • - Overweight, sedentary lifestyle, smoking, and alcohol significantly increase risk
  • - Breastfeeding, regular physical activity, and a balanced diet are protective
  • - Long-term hormonal treatments (contraceptive or replacement therapy) require appropriate monitoring

3. Multidisciplinary care

Breast cancer treatment involves a multidisciplinary approach: surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, psychological support…

A personalized treatment plan helps improve both quality of life and prognosis.

The Commitment of Ibn Khaldoun Medical Center

  • - The Ibn Khaldoun Medical Center reaffirms its annual commitment to the fight against breast cancer.
